Happy Friday :: Something Positive in Miami by Laura

Another fun fact about me, I get a huge migraine every time I enter the Miami area. It’s a painful experience, and I’d be happy to never go there again. BUT, since I am venturing down to the Keys this weekend, and I mentioned elephant poo poo paper yesterday, I figured this news story was appropriate.

Something positive has actually happened in Miami, at the Miami Metro Zoo. They have found a use for their MOUNDS of animal waste they “produce” on a daily basis.

Check out the article here.

Can you believe how much money they’re saving, while they’re saving loading all of that into the local landfill? Go Miami Metro Zoo.

…Tom Trump, Metrozoo’s horticulture supervisor tells Miami Herald that since launching last year’s project to reduce and recycle whatever possible, the zoo has saved more than $25,000 – $10,000 to $15,000 in fertilizer and $10,000 in topsoil.

Thrifty Thursday :: Stop & Smell the Pencils! by Laura

I have another confession to make, along with my obsession with plate sets, I LOVE school supplies. I wish I could buy school supplies every year, and outfit a dorm room every year, but alas, it’s been about 8 years since I was academically challenged.

I recently got rid of a garbage bag worth of school supplies I was hoarding before our move into the house, to a few deserving kids – it was hard to say goodbye!

So, to ease my pain of not buying myself silly in the stores, I have found a literal TON of great eco-friendly school supplies.

Green Apple Earth-Friendly School Supply offers conscientious consumers a place where they can buy a variety of school and office supplies that are made of either recycled, reclaimed, or managed forest products.

The Daily Green has a handful of great images and a list of resources for school supplies ranging from bags to Odds-N-Ends, some featured in the links below, but a nice review.

Smencils, pencils that are Eco-Friendly AND smell delicious! They’re made from 100% recycled newspapers. I can still smell the odd not-so-chocolatey brown marker I used to have.

Reusable Bags website has a bunch of links for big eco-brands like SIGG and EnviroSaks, even a great product called Wrap-N-Mat, great for school lunches.

Recycled Stainless Steel Scissors, anyone? Check out Amazon.

Sustainable Group has a handy website for “ReBinders” and a pile of handy office supplies for any student or office-type.

TreeSmart Group has a handful of great eco-friendly products, from pens and pencils to custom imprinted recycled newspaper pencils.

ForestChoice has tickled my pencil fancy, with cool pencils and colored pencils. ForestChoice certified pencils are the first pencil products in North America to be manufactured from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified Incense-cedar.

More pencils, you say? How about Recycled Jeans pencils from Green Earth Office Supply.

I’ve had my eye on a Staple Free Stapler for work, I might just have to cave ; ) – there’s also a slighty cheaper one in black, or multiple colors, or my favorite: the doggie and kittie.

Want to make paper clip jewelry? Try these recycled steel paper clips from GreenLine, or their hundreds of other eco-friendly items.

Everyone needs a ruler! Check out this Recycled Money Ruler or any of the other fun items GreenRaising offers.

Index Cards were a slight addiction of mine, I always had the best intention of organizing. Check out GreenLine Paper’s recycled index cards.

I’ve also noticed, been informed and viewed online all of the fun and economical eco-friendly paper options Target has. Check out their Recycled Paper Products line.

Which leads me to end with, Elephant Poo Poo Paper. Why, yes, they have thought of everything. Check it out, it’s worth a look and would be fun to share at school!

Happy Shopping!

Natural Luxe is my latest doggie find for great eco-friendly, organic gifts for pets and their humans.

First cool find was the English Retreads Vegan Dog Collar, stylish and comes in Apple Green!

Each one-of-a-kind English Retreads product is handcrafted from reclaimed truck inner tubes in Boulder, Colorado.

I found these Frisbees, or Zisk Disk, which my mom got Isabelle when they were dog sitting during our vacation recently. It’s one of the few toys Miss Destructo has not even put a dent in.

Engineered from our incredibly soft, yet durable Zogoflex® material, the Zisc® flies through the air with speed and accuracy. In your backyard, at the park or on the water (it floats!) the Zisc® is the must have interactive toy of the season! Zisc® is Guaranteed durable – even against the destructive fetchers! Designed to be recyclable!

I’m lusting over the Eco-Me Natural Dog Set:

Just add water, vinegar, baking soda & mix in Eco-Me’s dog blend essential oils with citronella, lavender & lemongrass. Fight bugs, odor and calm itchy skin all in one special mix!

While you’re shopping for the furry friend, why not pick up something for yourself or someone else? Pick me up one of these, how inspirational!

Another Reason Why I Love Justin Timberlake :: Greenest Golf Course in US by Laura

I’ve got a handful of reasons why I love Justin Timberlake, one of them being his down to earth personality, shown by the latest news that he bought the golf course where he first fell in love with golf.

This is a storybook tale here ladies and gents, it was going to auction and going to become a “development” (ahh, I can smell the day laborers and cheap carpet from here), Timberlake heard the news and was able to save it from track home hell, and made it better than ever.

It opened this last Saturday, the 25th.

Renamed Mirimichi Golf Course, Timberlake’s newest venture is the first project in the U.S. to receive the Audubon International’s Classic Sanctuary certification.

The course will feature irrigation systems that will maximize the use of rainwater, native landscaping and electric golf carts powered by solar panels.

“After we had the golf course, we said why don’t we refurbish it and make it even nicer for the community. Then I asked questions about what we could possibly do, and we found out we could actually make it a ‘green course,'” Timberlake said.

“So when it’s finished this summer it will be a Platinum LEED certified green course. The first in the United States of America, so that’s pretty exciting that you could take all that land and make it eco-friendly.”

I know it won’t be hard to convince my boyfriend to head out to TN and shoot a round on the “greenest” golfing destination in the US, and maybe I can spy on…I mean catch a glimpse of Justin  ; )

Meghan Monday: CHA comes to Orlando! by Meghan

cha_consumer_logoToday marks the start of a very busy, and exciting week, in Orlando, FL. The CHA (Craft & Hobby Association) Trade Show and Supershow starts tomorrow! The CHA trade show was in Chicago during the summer in the past, but this year they moved it to Orlando. They’ve also added a 2 day consumer Supershow that is open to the public.

I’ve always wanted to go to CHA, so when I found out that they were moving the summer show to Orlando I was beside myself! Not only do I get to attend the CHA Trade show, I will also be at the Supershow doing demos for Fiskars. So what is so great about CHA and the Supershow? Why should YOU want to go? Well, a couple of reason…

– If you are “in the biz,” then the CHA trade show is THE place to be. You can check out all the new products that various craft manufacturers are releasing this summer and fall. Its also the place to see all of the new GREEN products that companies are releasing. You can check out a list of all the manufacturers that will be there here.

– The supershow gives consumers a chance to see some of the new products and do a bit of shopping. A couple things to note: you will NOT be able to purchase the new products that are being shown at the show and not all of the manufacturers from the CHA tradeshow are staying for the supershow. You can check out a list of all the vendors for the supershow here.

worldrecordScrapbook Royalty and CHA have teamed up to bring you the Worlds Largest Crop attempt. On July 31st, from 5 – 11 pm, you can join your fellow scrappers as they attempt to break a world records. For just $20 you get 6 hours of cropping, goodie bags, scrapbook celebrities, and giveaways. The crop benefits the Leeza Gibbons foundation. Tickets can be purchased online or at the supershow.

Next Monday I will be posting all about the new GREEN products from CHA. Keep an eye out for photos, videos, and more!

Winter in the Summer :: Snowflakes and Heatwaves by Laura

Happy Friday everyone!

Today I found a cutie – a snowflake pin for only $2 AND it donates 14 bowls of food to needy animals. That’s a no brainer!

Then, receive $5 off an order of $25 or more with the code, HEATWAVE.

Since it’s almost the weekend, my head and heart tends to think of grand adventures – too bad it’s hotter than…well, something…outside in Florida. My recent idea? Camping Gear Rental! What better way to enjoy mother earth than getting and out and enjoying the Great Outdoors? AND its not wasteful and expensive like buying camping gear you’re never going to pull out of the garage as often as you’d like. Why not get the mack daddy tent and reinact fun shows or movies like Survivorman or the drippy nose, “I’m so scared….” into a video camera?
