Post-Consumer, Earth-Friendly

Reaching a longtime company goal, Earthbound Farm recently converted all our plastic salad containers to 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) content; they’ve always been made from recyclable #1 PET, but now they’re made from PET plastics, like soft drink bottles, that consumers have used and recycled. (And this post-consumer recycled PET can be recycled again and again.)

Using and creating a market for recycled materials like PET (known as “upcycling,” turning waste materials into useful products) will help make PCR materials more available and affordable for more companies — and help conserve precious resources. At Earthbound Farm, we expect our use of PCR in place of virgin plastic will save over 424 million BTUs of energy and more than 68,000 gallons of water, divert more than 1.3 million pounds of reusable materials from landfills, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 16,000 tons each year.

They are designing new labels for their salad containers and adding a symbol to represent the environmentally friendly PCR content of the package. They’d like to know which symbol you think is the most meaningful. Please take the brief survey and let them know what you think.

Also check out their entire site for recipes, a contest, etc.
